Music Meets Mogul Empire: Anirudh Ravichander to Marry Kavya Maran, Chennai Reception on November 21

Hyderabad/Chennai: One of India's most talked-about weddings of the year is now official. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander is set to marry Kavya Maran, the daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran and the co-owner of the SunRisers Hyderabad IPL franchise, with a grand wedding reception scheduled in Chennai on November 21, 2026.

The confirmation came not from the couple or their families directly, but from the Telangana Chief Minister's Office, which posted on X on Friday evening that Kavya's parents had personally visited Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to invite him to the reception.

"Sun Group Chairman Shri Kalanithi Maran and his wife, Smt. Kavery Maran, met Hon'ble Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy at his residence in Jubilee Hills and invited him to the wedding reception of their daughter, Kavya Maran," the Telangana CMO posted. "The wedding reception of Kavya Maran and Anirudh Ravichander is scheduled to be held in Chennai on November 21."

The post included photographs and video of the meeting at the Chief Minister's residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, with the Chief Minister's wife also present, according to an official release. The announcement has renewed intense public interest in the couple after more than a year of speculation about their relationship.

According to media reports, the reception invitation has been issued in the name of DMK president M.K. Stalin, reflecting the Maran family's longstanding association with Tamil Nadu's political establishment — the Marans are part of the extended family of DMK founder M. Karunanidhi. The reception is expected to take place at the ITC Grand Chola on Anna Salai in Chennai at 6.30 pm on November 21, reports said.

The guest list, going by the invitation trail so far, reads like a cross-section of Indian power. The Maran family has also extended invitations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, according to media reports. The outreach to leaders across political lines underlines the family's influence well beyond Tamil Nadu, though attendance has not yet been confirmed.

The wedding brings together two of the most influential families in South India's overlapping worlds of cinema, media, business and cricket.

Anirudh Ravichander, 35, is among the most sought-after music directors in the country, with chart-topping soundtracks across Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema. He is the son of actor Ravi Raghavendra and classical dancer Lakshmi Ravichander, and the nephew of superstar Rajinikanth. His high-energy compositions and background scores have made him a defining musical voice of the current generation, with a fan following that extends well beyond the film industry.

Kavya Maran is the daughter of Kalanithi Maran, the founder and chairman of the Sun Group — one of India's largest media conglomerates, with interests spanning television, FM radio, newspapers and direct-to-home services — and Kavery Kalanithi.

As the public face and co-owner of the SunRisers Hyderabad franchise in the Indian Premier League, she has become one of the most recognisable figures in Indian cricket administration, regularly seen in the stands during IPL matches and closely involved in the franchise's operations. The Sun Group's interests also extend to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa's SA20 league.

The Maran family occupies a unique position at the intersection of Tamil Nadu's politics and media. Kalanithi Maran is the son of the late Murasoli Maran, the veteran DMK leader and former Union minister, and the grandnephew of DMK founder M. Karunanidhi.

That lineage explains why the wedding reception invitation carries the name of the current DMK president — the marriage is as much a political gathering as a family celebration, and the guest list is expected to reflect decades of the family's relationships across parties and industries.

On the groom's side, the family is cinema royalty of a different kind. Anirudh's uncle Rajinikanth remains the biggest star in Tamil cinema, and his uncle Y. Gee. Mahendra is a veteran actor.

Anirudh himself broke through as a teenager with the viral sensation "Why This Kolaveri Di" and has since composed some of the biggest soundtracks in Indian cinema, working with top directors and stars across languages. His concerts draw massive crowds, and his background scores have become as anticipated as the films they accompany.

Rumours about the couple's relationship began circulating in 2025, after a post on Reddit claimed the two had been dating for over a year and that their families had begun discussing marriage. At the time, Anirudh dismissed the speculation in characteristic style. "Marriage ah? lol .. Chill out guys. Please stop spreading rumours," he wrote on X in June 2025.

The speculation refused to die down. In June 2026, actor Y. Gee. Mahendra, Anirudh's uncle, spoke about the composer's reported wedding plans in an interview, congratulating his nephew and saying, "Based on what I've been told, it's a sure thing. They are getting married."

Unconfirmed reports have claimed that the wedding ceremony itself will take place in Greece on November 11, ahead of the Chennai reception. Those details have not been independently confirmed by the couple or their families, and neither Anirudh nor Kavya has personally issued a public statement about the wedding arrangements. The confirmation so far has come only through the invitation trail.

That reticence is in keeping with how both families have handled the story from the start — saying little in public while the rumour mill worked overtime. The Telangana CMO's post, issued after what was essentially a courtesy call, ended up doing the job of a formal announcement.

The wedding has all the makings of a defining social event of the season: a beloved music composer, the heiress to a media empire, an IPL franchise, political heavyweights across party lines and a guest list that spans cinema, business and government. If the reception at the ITC Grand Chola lives up to the billing, November 21 in Chennai will be an evening the country's power circuit will not want to miss.

What remains unconfirmed — the Greece ceremony, the full guest list, the couple's own words — will no doubt keep the story alive in the weeks ahead. For now, the date is set, the invitations are out, and one of the year's most anticipated weddings is officially on.
