Stampede-Like Crush at Kolkata's Chorbagan Durga Puja Pandal Leaves at Least 25 Injured on Saptami Evening

At least 25 people were injured on Saturday evening after a stampede-like crush broke out at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata, turning one of the city's biggest festival nights into a scene of chaos and fear.

The incident took place around 7 pm on Saptami — the seventh day of Durga Puja, when footfall at Kolkata's famous community pandals peaks — as a sudden spell of rain and lightning swept over parts of the city. According to a senior police officer, the crowd waiting outside the Chorbagan pandal began rushing forward as the rain started, and several people fell on the road in the surge.

What followed, witnesses said, was a terrifying few minutes of pushing, falling and screaming in the packed lane outside the pandal.

Some reports said a section of the pandal structure gave way under the pressure of the crowd, while others described the exit gate collapsing as devotees pressed against it. Footwear lay scattered across the road outside the pandal — grim evidence of the panic that had swept through the crowd moments earlier.

The injured were rushed to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, with police confirming that "at least 25 people were taken to the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital in serious condition." Several of them were reported to be suffering from suffocation and breathing difficulties, consistent with a crush in a tightly packed crowd.

Hospital and police sources indicated that the condition of some of the injured was critical, and there were unconfirmed reports of fatalities — claims that the Kolkata Police had not officially confirmed even late into the night.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal, Health Minister Saradwat Mukherjee and other senior officials rushed to the hospital after news of the incident spread. Disaster management personnel were deployed at the pandal site to carry out rescue operations, and the entrance to the puja pandal was closed to visitors as a precaution.

An eyewitness described the horror to news agency ANI: "Many people lost consciousness; some were being taken on motorcycles. I witnessed this happening all around — when people fainted, they were taken away on bikes. All of this took place, and there was a massive crowd as well."

Several visitors alleged that the stampede occurred because of inadequate safety and crowd-management arrangements, a charge that is likely to intensify scrutiny of how the city's biggest community pujas handle the lakhs of devotees who throng their gates each evening. Durga Puja, West Bengal's largest festival, draws enormous crowds to Kolkata's marquee pandals every year, and crowd surges at popular pandals have been a recurring safety concern.

Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was deeply shocked by the incident. "Deeply shocked and saddened to learn about the stampede at the Chorbagan puja pandal. I pray to Maa Durga for the speedy recovery of all those injured and for strength and courage for their families during this difficult time," she said.

The Chorbagan Sarbojanin is one of the well-known community pujas of north Kolkata, and Saptami evening traditionally marks the beginning of the festival's busiest stretch, with crowds swelling through the night until the immersion processions. Saturday's rain had already made the streets slippery, compounding the danger when the crowd began to move as one.

Police said further details were awaited and described the situation as developing. Disaster management teams remained at the site late into the evening, and officials said a clearer picture of the number of injured — and whether there were any deaths — would emerge after the hospital completed its assessment.

The incident is certain to raise difficult questions about crowd control at Kolkata's Durga Puja pandals, where narrow lanes, sudden weather changes and surging footfall can combine with little warning. For the families gathered at the Calcutta Medical College on Saturday night, however, the immediate concern was far simpler: the condition of their loved ones, caught in a crush that nobody saw coming.

The conflicting accounts of casualties underline how fluid the situation remained through the night. While the police's confirmed figure stood at 25 injured, some outlets citing hospital and police sources reported that several people had succumbed to their injuries and that others were in critical condition, and one report put the number of feared dead as high as 17.

The Kolkata Police had not officially confirmed any deaths, and officials cautioned that only the hospital's final assessment would establish the true toll. In crush incidents, early casualty figures are notoriously unreliable, and authorities urged the public to rely on official updates rather than unverified claims circulating on social media.

The tragedy has also thrown a spotlight on the safety preparations around this year's Puja. In the run-up to the festival, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had suspended the food licences of 40 eateries in the city over safety violations — a reminder that civic authorities were already on alert about festival-season hazards.

Yet the sheer scale of the crowds at marquee pandals like Chorbagan Sarbojanin, where narrow north Kolkata lanes funnel tens of thousands of visitors through limited entry and exit points, makes crowd management one of the most difficult policing challenges of the year.

For now, the entrance to the Chorbagan pandal remains closed, disaster management teams continue to comb the site, and police have promised a detailed account once the rescue and medical operations are complete. But for Kolkata, a city that treats Durga Puja as its greatest collective celebration, Saturday night's crush at Chorbagan will be remembered as the evening the festival's joy gave way to grief — and as a stark warning that celebration and safety must go hand in hand.

According to ground reports, the puja organisers themselves stepped in to assist the affected devotees and help manage the situation in the first chaotic minutes, before police and disaster management teams took charge of the rescue operation. Officials have appealed to citizens to avoid the area around the Chorbagan pandal to allow emergency vehicles free movement, and to rely only on official bulletins for updates on the injured.
